How to pack for a family road trip?

Do you have a small kid? In that case, you certainly know that almost everything takes longer with children than usual. Packing for a vacation or a trip is no exception. Although you can pack a lot more things when traveling by car than when traveling by train or plane, the packaging must be well planned so that you do not pack the whole household in the end. Here are some tips on how to effectively pack for a road trip with children!

Start packing in advance

Probably all of us have already experienced last-minute packing followed by finding out what we forgot to pack. Prevent this situation to happen by packing in advance! Make a list of the things you want to take with you and try to follow it. Also, don't forget to wash and iron the clothes you plan to pack with you ahead of time. If have bigger children, let them assist you while packing - they might find it a funny activity and may also choose toys or things without which they cannot imagine their holiday.

Be organized

Don't pack everything. Stick to the list of things you have made and pack only what you really need. Pay attention to what your children need during a regular day, which toys they play with the most at the moment, and what clothes they prefer to wear. Also, check the weather forecast and adjust your packaging accordingly. If you rent a car for your vacation, double-check the size of the luggage compartment with the car rental.

When to set off?

If you rent a car, you better follow the opening hours of the car rental, thus avoiding unnecessary fees for taking over or returning the vehicle outside the opening hours. If you are traveling in your own car, you are probably deciding whether to travel during the day or at night. Well, it depends on where you are going and for how long. If you are going to a more distant destination, it is better to travel overnight. If you have a shorter road trip, you can set off during the day. In this case, however, be sure to check if there are places on your route where you can stop to have a short walk with the children if needed.

Safety first

Needless to say, the safety of you and your children is essential. Make sure that the child's car seat is as safe and comfortable as possible. If you don't have one, it shouldn't be a big deal to borrow it. If you rent a car, do not forget to check the availability of the child seat directly at the car rental.
Also, you shouldn't forget about medicine (painkillers, thermometer, band-aid, disinfectant, etc). Don't forget to pack some repellent and sun/after sun cream as well.

Toys

If you are traveling with children, you will definitely need to pack a few toys. However, do not take with you all the toys your children point to. They will definitely have a lot of activities on the trip and they won't need that many toys.
